Your Shutter Pictures
If you've purchased shutters from Exterior Elements and love the way they look, we would like to share your pictures with everybody. Take pride in your homes new look, send us a picture of your home before and after you spiced it up with new decorative shutters. If your picture is posted on our web site, we'll send you a free gift worth up to $15 dollars. Minimum free gift of $10.
Pictures must be at 72ppi resolution an no smaller than 350 x 350 in size. If the image is of poor quality we will not be able to use it. Digital photos are preferred but we will will also accept prints. If mailing prints please send them to the address listed below.

Care & Cleaning
While our shutters come closer to being totally maintenance free than any other shutters on the market today, they will become dirty as does a freshly painted house, a new automobile , or any other product which is exposed to atmospheric conditions. Generally, your Shutters can be cleaned satisfactorily with the use of any ordinary garden hose. If this does not do the job, we suggest the following.
- With a garden hose and a soft bristle brush wash your shutters gently.
- Where soil is of a stubborn nature, the following cleaning solution
- 1/3 cup detergent (Tide for example)
- 2/3 cup Tri-sodium (Soilax for example)
- 4 quarts of water
In certain geographical areas where mildew may be a problem, substitute one quart of 5% sodium hydrochloride (Clorox for example) for one quart of water in the formula above. Where your Exterior Elements Shutter is extremely dirty, it is recommended that you start washing from to top and work down to the bottom. Apply cleaning solution and let stand several minutes in order for the dirt to loosen. The siding must be rinsed thoroughly to avoid staining and/or streaking.
How to Paint (For paintable, styrene, products only) - Top
- Do not expose shutters to direct sunlight before, during or immediately after painting.
Shutters should be between 60 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit for best results.
- Clean shutter panels using either a mixture of ammonia and water, 1 cup per gallon,
or Tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) or water, follow directions on container.
Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry 1 hour.
- Prime Shutter with a good primer. We recommend Zinnser Bullseye 1-2-3
or Zinnser Cover-Stain or Masterchem KILZ II or Masterchem KILZ Total One.
Follow manufacture’s recommendations.
- For Best results use high quality oil base or latex paint for top coat.
DO NOT USE ANY TYPE OF VINYL BASED PAINT.
- Apply two coats of finish paint following the manufacturer’s recommendations on
the amount of time between coats. The paint can be applied with a brush
or spraying following the paint manufacturer’s recommendations.
- Allow the shutter to dry four days prior to installation, especially if the shutter
will be exposed to direct sunlight and high temperatures.
This will allow the paint to fully cure.

What types of surface can shutters be installed on?
Shutters can be installed on all types of surfaces, using the following mounting hardware and mounting instructions:Shutter Spikes - The shutter spikes are provided for the shutters and a ¼” drill bit will be the correct size to use for installing. The drill bit should be correct for the material the house is made of. Brick, concrete block or stucco on concrete will require a masonry-type drill. Shutter Screws – Pre drill the shutter ¼” hole. Screws are self tapping in most materials except brick, stucco and cement.
Can I paint the exterior shutters?
Yes! We offer a Dura-Styrene shutter #049, which is paintable. Also, our standard Dura Finish Color-Through colors are paintable by a new product by Sherwin Williams “Krylon Fusion” paint. See Sherwin Williams for warranty and instructions.
If I order a colored shutter can I paint it a different color?
Yes! Use Sherwin Williams “Krylon Fusion” paint. See Sherwin Williams for warranty and instructions.
How thick is the material used on your exterior shutters?
The material varies from 1/8” to 3/16" based on the structural requirements of a particular area of the shutters panel.
How thick are the shutters?
The shutter panel will be 1” deep when installed.
Can I use a different color for trim accessories than for the shutter panels?
This is a subjective question. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We have many customers that have used a different color for the trim accessories than for the panels.

All claims must be accompanied by proof of purchase together with the owner's name, address, telephone number, and brief description of the problem. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state. In the event of defect (as described above) Exterior Elements should first be given reasonable opportunity to determine its possible responsibility prior to any repairs or replacements being made and the defective shutters must be returned to Exterior Elements, PREPAID . Upon receipt and at its option, Exterior Elements, will repair or replace the defective shutters and return the repaired or replaced shutters to the claimant.
Exterior Elements is not responsible for any costs or expenses incurred in the removal or reinstallation of its product nor is it responsible for any inconvenience, commercial loss, incidental or consequential damages.
Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so this limitation may not apply to you. This warranty does not cover damages or defects caused by product misuse or abuse, improper installation, fire or acts of God such as hurricanes, tornadoes or hailstorms. For our records, please register your purchase and installation below by sending a copy of this warranty in its entirety to the Exterior Elements, address listed. Return / Cancellation Policy - Top
Our ultimate goal is for you to be completely satisfied with your purchase. If you receive an item you are dissatisfied with, you may return it within 90 days of receipt for a full refund. The product(s) you wish to return must be returned in the original packaging with all accessories and manuals included in order to receive full credit.
Then you need to call our Customer Service Number at 1-800-479-4040 for a Return Goods Authorization. Upon confirmed receipt and condition of the returned item, back at our vendor, we will promptly issue a refund by crediting the original form of payment. Sorry, we cannot refund Shipping and Handling charges or your costs to return the product(s). A 30% return fee will be charged for return products.
Custom/Special Orders - Top
Returns on all custom/specially sized items that are ordered to the customer’s specifications will be charged a 30% return fee. We reserve the right to charge a 30% fee on an order cancellation (less shipping cost) if that product has already been manufactured for you. Exterior Elements reserves the right to refuse the return of any custom order that was incorrectly ordered by the customer.
Problems due to shipping errors, defects or damages - Top
Products with missing parts, defective or damaged must be reported to us within 10 days of receipt. Shipping damage reported after this time period my be harder to claim against the shipper. Please call (800) 479-4040 and one of our customer service representatives will promptly assist you. Your satisfaction with our products and Services is very important to us. It is helpful but not required that you take pictures of orders that have been damaged in shipping. This helps us to file quicker claims with our shipper.
